In 1928, the California National Guard established Camp Merriam on 5,800 acres in San Luis Obispo County. The U.S. Army acquired use of the camp in 1940, and it was renamed Camp San Luis Obispo. Additional lands were annexed in the early 1940s, and the camp grew to 14,959 acres.

Mission San Luis Obispo is one of the only missions that never had to relocate; it still stands on its original site. The mission's walls, which are 50 to 60 feet high, were built according to Vatican law. This law stated that churches were to be built as tall as the local tree – in this case, the pine.

In 1821 Mexico, which included California, gained independence from Spain. The Mexican government ended the mission system, and the church lost control of the land. Later California became part of the United States. The U.S. government returned the mission to the Roman Catholic Church in 1859.
